The Most Popular Bras Types

Women have worn bras, or bra-like undergarments, since the 14th century B.C. We’ve worn woolen breast-bands and whalebone corsets and cone-shaped “bullet bras.” Today, there are bras for every breast size and shape, for every outfit and occasion. These eight popular bra types prioritize comfort and support, but also enhance the wearer’s appearance:

1. Strapless bra
For spaghetti straps, tank tops, and strapless dresses, strapless bras come in handy. It’s important to choose a strapless bra in the right size; the band must fit tightly around the body. Many strapless bras have silicone grips on the inside to prevent slippage. Strapless bra types include the bandeaux, a circle of stretchy fabric with no wires, and the convertible bra, which features detachable straps.

2. Plunge bra
The plunge bra was designed to be worn with a low cut neckline. It has a low, thin centerpiece, with very short wires under the cups. This bra pushes the breasts together and upward for dramatic effect. The U-cup or deep plunge variety has an even lower center, sometimes inches below the cups. It includes side boning for extra support.

3. Demi cup bra
Also called a shelf bra, the demi covers about half of the breast. Unlike the plunge bra, which only dips low in the middle, demi cup bra is low-cut across the cups as well, rising just above the nipples. It has wide-set straps, so it can be worn with a wider neckline. The demi bra doesn’t provide much coverage; it’s better for small or average-sized breasts.

4. Full cup bra
This type of bra covers the breasts completely. It is a popular choice for those who have larger breasts. The cups offers coverage and shaping for a full bust. Wide straps give comfort and extra support to the wearer.

5. Push up bra
For a little extra “oomph,” the push up bra doesn’t disappoint. It gives the appearance of a fuller, higher bust. The secret is an insert made of fabric, or filled with gel or water, that rests inside the cup underneath the breast. The padding, along with a strong underwire, pushes breasts inward and upward.

6. Sports bra
The sports bra, originally “jockbra,” was invented by a female runner. It restrains breast movement during physical activity, decreasing soreness and chafing. Some sports bras are molded to the breasts’ shape. Others compress the breasts by flattening them against the chest.

7. T-shirt bra
This popular bra is meant to be worn under a form-fitting shirt. Seamless, molded cups won’t show through fabric. Inside the cup, a thin layer of foam hides the nipple without adding bulk. This is considered a modest, everyday bra suited for all bust sizes.

8. Bralette
A bralette has wide straps but no wires, lining or padding. Ideal for small breasts, this simple bra can be worn as underwear or outerwear. It is often used as a training bra.
